President Donald Trump on Sunday defended his recent executive actions on immigration and refugees, saying that the media was falsely reporting that it was a ban on Muslims instead of keeping the country safe.
Despite his steadfastness on the matter, even a top aide walked back part of the order, showing signs of confusion within the administration which is struggling with the severe backlash of its actions.
“America is a proud nation of immigrants and we will continue to show compassion to those fleeing oppression, but we will do so while protecting our own citizens and border, ” the president said in an afternoon statement.
“To be clear, this is not a Muslim ban, as the media is falsely reporting. This is not about religion — this is about terror and keeping our country safe. “
So far, thousands have gathered outside the White House to demand Trump rescind his executive order, one of many protests across the world.
